Took Jake to his 3-month checkup yesterday. The pediatrician said we should start giving him a vitamin supplement with iron. Up til now he has been exclusively breastfed and doing fine. When I asked why he wa nts me to give the vitamins, I was told that by 3 months, the baby has used up all his stores of iron and needs additional. Well, I checked my Dr. Sears book at home and learned that, YES, the baby uses all his STORES of iron by 3 months, BUT that breastmilk will continue to provide all the iron he needs. I dont want to do the wrong thing for my babys health, but I would rather not give him vitamins if they are unnecessary (DH agrees with me). And should I te ll the doctor, if I decide not to give them? Any experience with this?
Anyway, the third option is to just not tell the doctor. I know that most people frown on that, and it should only be a last resort, b ut IME, sometimes it has been a necessary resort. For example, when I am pregnant the military doctors love to push the iron. But I dont need it. I have very high iron levels, and they are terrific when Im pregnant. I know this because I endure blood tests with every single visit as well, so if my iron levels werent great, Id find out. Not taking the pills is a big deal for me. Iron pills make me horribly con stipated, horribly. Combine that with hemorrhoids and you get one miserable, pa in-wracked preggo. I have tried explaining this to the military medical mindset , but it just does not get through. I also have to see a different doctor near ly every time I go in, and I endure a long wrangle over it every single visit, eating up all my appointment time and leaving no time for th.
I am 78+ years of age and do not take vitamin supplements/pi ls/etc. I enjoy reasonably good health.the reasons I dont--Most drug store vitamins are ineffective--taking too much of some vitamins--liquid form c an be dangerous-- should be taken as prescribed by a doctor--vitamins work bet ter if taken at meal times--most foods now have vitamins added--doctors pres cribe vitamin C for colds;it has seemed to help friends.
